Pet Health Insurance by Dr. Jack Stevens, DMV

According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association (APPMA) 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, there are approximately 74.8 million owned dogs and roughly 88.3 million owned cats in the United States. We love our pets! They are full-fledged, four-legged family members to many of us; often times, they are the closest "family" we have! So shouldn't we take care of them as we do any other family member, or ourselves? Proper nutrition, exercise and, of course, insurance - pet insurance.
Pet health insurance has been available for nearly 20 years, and is now accessible in all 50 states and many countries outside the United States. Pet health insurance can help pay for routine preventive treatments - like vaccinations and dental cleanings, as well as unplanned or emergency care. After all, our beloved pets are naturally active, curious and often times "risk-takers", which can, unfortunately, result in injury or illness.
Just like people, our pets get sick. In fact, every year approximately 6 million dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer in the United States, according to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of treatment options available in veterinary medicine (including radiation and chemotherapy) to treat our pets. However, as veterinary medicine and technology advance, so does the expense. Veterinary costs have more than doubled in the past decade, and veterinary medicine is one of the few medical professions that is not financially based on insurance. Rather, pet owners are responsible for all veterinary costs, from preventive, to emergency and ongoing care.
This is why veterinary pet insurance is so important. When our pets are sick, we feel stressed and worried enough without the additional burden of wondering how we are going afford our pet's care.
Pet health insurance is available and affordable, and it can bring peace of mind to those who love their "furry family!"
